If You Want To Know What A Man’s Like

If you want to know what a man’s like,
take a good look at how he treats his inferiors,
not his equals.
~J. K. Rowling~
If you want to know what a man’s like,
take a good look at why he thinks he has inferiors.
~C. F. Fears, West Point, GA~
Both quotes no doubt are right but for me to know a person, watch how they do things when they think they are not being watched. People automatically put on a show when they think they have an audience, even when they are among friends. It is truly when they think they are not being watched or judged or will face no consequence for their actions, that their true selves come through. To deceive is easy, unfortunately, but to be deceived over and over again by the same person, that’s just pure stupidity.
How many times does a person have to betray your confidence, before you decide that they are not worth it? Or the other way around, how much does a person have to prove that they are worthy of your confidence before you trust them?
There is a saying in my language – bangla – The person who wrongs someone and the person who bears that wrong silently are equally guilty. I believe in that, in fact, I would extend it a little further, if you watch someone being wronged and you fail to stand up for them, then you are as guilty as the perpetrator. This makes for a hard life – upholding truth, honor, respect, rights – not just for yourself but for those around you. It also takes a lot of courage and honesty, rather unfortunately, you are not likely to find a lot of champions like that around.
If we only remember that even one person can make a difference, then this could change. You can be the change today, that you want to see in the society tomorrow. Be the change, start the revolution.
