Know your project team members
A few weeks into my new career as a project manager, one of the most valuable piece of advice that I received from another seasoned project manager was to get to know my team members. I didn’t like this project manager at first, I thought he was rude and snobbish but I have to admit that I loved the dynamics that he shared with his team members. So much so in fact that I resolved to pick his brains every chance I get. I watched his interaction, his behavior with his team members and his stake holders. I guess I could say that I learned more from observation and emulation than I did from all the advises that I received.
The result showed when in hard times my project team pulled in together to resolve issues. People went beyond their call of duty to help keep the project moving, to resolve bottleneck issues and come up with innovative ways to deal with problems that kept popping up. It paid dividends in getting to know my team members, their strengths, their weaknesses.
