Too little sleep – sign of heroism?
Companies that are stretched, usually squeeze their employees until one person is burdened with the work of 3 (best case scenerio). Work pressure builds to the point where a person is forced to work under constant pressure – reducing both their effectiveness and definitely what the companies love to talk about but rarely actively encourage – their innovatiness. People who are stressed, forced into working long hours and survive on less sleep, no vacation time, no breaks, lose their edge. Such people are definitely not going to give the company innovative ideas. They don’t have time to finish their work, when are they going to come up with innovation? Whether its streamlining processes or just coming up with new ways to use existing products, improving services.
Bottomline – a company with blue collar workers might get away with forcing their people to produce more and more while cutting down on leasure time, vacation days, weekends away from work but any company using knowledge workers is basically just negatively impacting their own bottom line doing the same thing.
So after months of being completely stressed out and working through the weekends, this week I finally insisted on taking some of my vacation days to just stay home. Chill out, relax, read some books, watch some movies, catch up on my favorite blogs and generally just give my brain a break.
